craigslist, local newspaper, tanks really arent THAT expensive, especially small ones but the only place you’ll find “A$s cheap” ones are used

You can always try your local Freecycle. I have gotten up to a 55 gallon tank for free on there. :)

You use words like nice that might mean something different to you than to me.

In any case, stores like WalMart, PetSmart, Petco, and many others will sell you a bare 10 gallon retangular glass tank for something around $12.

Starter sets that would include a filter and a hood and some other things are around $40.

Now the hood that would be included is not what I would call a nice hood, usually they are two bulb nonhinged hoods. You can get flourescent bulbs for them to reduce heat and power consumption.

    They are pretty good values.

Now the best value isn’t found in a store though. You can get some real nice equipment really cheap, but you have to be patient and keep your eyes open.

Chances are, it will take awhile and you will read lots of adds in papers, both adds in pets, in misc. and the best are rummage sales.

The cheapest I know of is free. A friend bought an add (okay not quite free) and said how he was a student who would love to have a couple of fish and an aquarium and a lady gave him hers. She had a nice setup and was going to move to another state and didn’t want to bother.

If you let a whole bunch of people you know, know you want one. It’s acutally pretty likely someone you know has one or more just sitting in their basement or attic not being used.

my 10 gallon kit came from walmart for $40 but trust me 10 gallons is no fun if u get really far into the hobby. if u want to have years of enjoyment from a fish tank get at least a 20 gallon. if u just want something thats small and not much of a hassle and is just there for looks not for anything serious like showing or breeding then 10 gallons is fine
another place you may check is craigslist ive seen tanks worth a $1000 for like $50 so checking there may be worth your time.

    a ten gallon tank?
you can find it used from craigslist etc. I’ve purchased them for 3$ and that is the tank, filter, gravel and everything. Garage sales ppl just sell crap for nothing.
