Go to a furniture store and buy a TV Stand for a similarly sized television. If that is still too expensive, then start looking at yard sales and flea markets for one.
If you are handy with tools, you can build one. Go to the part store and look up a book on how to build one. You can stain the wood any color and make cabinets and shelves. If you don’t have the equipment, your local Home Depot can cut the wood for you.
There are lots of plans for stands you can build. Most pieces of wooden furniture can easily handle that much wieght as well. Depends on your tastes and the location you wish to keep it in. You can build a stand for less or even buy a kitchen cabinet module with top for less then that. It would give a place for storage as well.
Build one yourself out of Dexion angle strips (that may be a UK product and you are obviously in the US if a gallon weighs 8lb!) but there are slotted angle strips that one can buy used to make shelving for warehouses or garages. It is not very aesthetic but you could always cover it with plywood or MDF to create a cupboard to store the food and other necessaries.
I would think that would cost a lot less than $250.
we have all large tanks and I dont trust the looks of most of the stands, we use concrete blocks under all the large tanks
even on hardwood floors you dont get the “sway” that you get from aquarium stands

If you haven’t already bought the new 48g I would recommend going to your LFS (Local Fish Store – Pet Store) and just buying the complete setup.
I’ve heard of people buying used setups in the past with great success, but personally I like new stuff.
